REAR BRAKE PIPES

-

We’d discovered 1 there was corrosion in both rear brake pipes, so planned to renew them this month. First, the inner wheelarch trim had to be moved aside to access each brake pipe at the flexi-hose connection.

With a clearer view 2 of the corroded brake pipe on each side, we managed to slacken the connection between the flexi-hose and the pipe on the nearside rear, but...

…on the offside rear, 3 the pipe connection was excessively corroded, so the spanner couldn’t get a grip. Instead, we cut through the pipe, then used a pair of pliers to undo the pipe nut. This side was more corroded than the nearside.

The majority of the rear 4 brake pipes are concealed by the undertrays for the floors, which are secured with 10mm plastic nuts. Upon removing the nearside undertray, we discovered the remains of a rodent that had been living here.

5 Only the rearmost of each rear brake pipe was corroded, so we cut each pipe, replacing roughly two feet. The pipe was unclipped to make it easier to cut.
