The V6 petrol model needs a replacement cambelt every five years or 60,000 miles; it’s slightly longer on the diesel models, with most owners preferring to do it at 80,000 miles or sooner depending on use. But just check out the price of the cambelt kits!

Manual gearboxes on the 2.4 and 2.5 suffer from weak synchromesh, particularly when coupled to torquey diesels. Autos are more rugged, but are prone to fluid leaks. Engine component prices OIL FILTER Main dealer £16.36 Independent from £9.79 CAMBELT KIT Main dealer £400.08 Independent from £229.99 EGR VALVE Main dealer £107.28 Independent from £329.99

Suspension/steering There’s very little to report here beyond the usual bush wear. The anti-roll bar bushes seem to take quite a hammering, as do the front top mounts. When replacing the lower wishbone bushes it makes sense to buy a complete arm.

Suspension/steering component prices ANTI-ROLL BAR BUSH (PAIR) Main dealer £31.90 (pair) Independent from £26.98 FRONT WISHBONE ARM Main dealer £423.83 Independent from £54.00

Electrics

The complex electrics are likely to give the most headaches – dash lights failing, spurious airbag lights coming on and other minor glitches are all par for the course, sadly. The power sliding doors and tailgate on higher-specced models can also cause problems; it’s a case of going through everything with a test meter and checking for broken wires/faulty connections. Failing that, it could be the locking actuator or motor. Window regulators also stop working, as can the central locking system. It seems lots of issues stem from weak or drained batteries (they have a high failure rate), so buying a beefy new replacement is a good place to start. Some owners put battery drain down to a faulty stereo amplifier located in the right-hand rear quarter panel.

Aircon compressors can seize – and sourcing replacement parts can be exorbitant, as you can see below. Electrical component prices DOOR MOTORS Main dealer £468.95 WINDOW REGULATOR Main dealer £135.82 Independent from £153.99 AIRCON COMPRESSOR Main dealer £1281.86 Independent from £344.99

Brakes

Owners have reported sticky brake calipers due to pins corroding and getting stuck, causing uneven pad wear; it’s an issue that’s easily solved by removing the pin, cleaning it, then applying a copper-based grease. Some Voyagers were subject to a recall regarding the handbrake ratchet, so if it slips check the necessary work’s been carried out. Main dealer discs and pads are pricey. Brake component prices FRONT BRAKE DISCS (PAIR) Main dealer £201.79 Independent from £55.98 FRONT BRAKE PADS Main dealer £149.75 Independent from £34.99

Other problems

Due to their size, you can expect a bit of damage to the integrated bumpers on the Voyager, but a smart repairer should be able to sort out the minor scrapes. There shouldn’t be any rust, although some owners have found corrosion in the sills, so beware. Remember that lots were used as airport taxis – but it’s not necessarily a problem as long as the interior’s not too scruffy and there’s a service history. Other component prices Smart bumper repair from £60
