Intermittent speedo

-

My 2002 Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 petrol has recently developed an intermittent problem with the speedo. It works OK from cold, but the speedo stays at 0 once the car has warmed up. Occasionally it will come back, but usually not. All the dash lights work, together with the rev counter and other gauges. There are no fault codes showing. I fear the problem is due to a faulty electronic circuit board and might be terminal. Can you suggest a solution? Richard Chappell I would first check the wiring to the speed sensor, which is located in the gearbox. One of the common issues with the Focus is a failure of the wiring loom between the engine and the vehicle body. The wiring loom runs close to the gearchange cables and I have seen the loom rub through and cause such a problem. Faults are not always easily spotted and close inspection of the loom is often required to see the failure, paying particular attention to the underside of the loom where it runs close to the gear cables.

It is also possible the speed sensor is failing. When the oil in the gearbox warms up, it allows the sensor wiring to warm and expand, resulting in an open circuit. If no fault can be found with the wiring, you might consider replacing the sensor. As the other instruments work without fault, I would expect the cause of the problem to be with either the sender or its associated wiring rather than the dash-pod electronics.
