Remote key-fob

-

Can you advise me of a suitable company to supply an infrared key-fob and key for my 1998 Peugeot 306 GTI-6? The key-fob works fine with new batteries, but will flatten them over a week, possibly due to an internal short. I have been told that these keys are obsolete and cannot be reprogrammed as they were matched with the car at the factory. Surely there must be a way to replace or repair my key-fob?

Also, can you tell me the location of the resistor pack for the heater blower (if the aircon version of the car has one) on a W-reg Peugeot 306 hatchback I am stripping for spares? Tony Graham

Answering your second question first, the resistor pack in the 306 with air-conditioning is built into the blower motor housing and comes complete with the blower motor. This is located under the passenger side of the dashboard and is accessed by removing the lower panel.

With regard to your main question, as the key-fob will operate correctly with new batteries, we can hopefully assume that the in-vehicle system is functioning correctly. With this in mind, it is easy to programme a new remote to the vehicle.

This is done by removing the remote from the key, unlocking the vehicle and placing the key into the ignition, turning it to the ‘Accessory’ position. Point the remote at the receiver in the roof console and press the large lock/unlock button, wait 20 seconds and then press the small button. Turn off the ignition, remove the key and, after around five seconds, it can be tested. This can be repeated for an additional remote.

A new remote key with a blank blade can be bought on ebay for around £23 including delivery, and this can then be cut by any local key cutter and programmed to suit the vehicle. Secondhand keys-fobs are also available for around £5, into which you can fit your blade.
