Steering wheel change

Car Mechanics (UK) - - Help! -

In the November 2016 issue of CM, a car had cruise control fitted simply by swapping the stalk control for a used one which included cruise control, because the car’s wiring circuit already included everything required. Can this be done with my 2006 MINI R50 Park Lane by buying a used steering wheel which has the additional controls? I’m not really bothered about cruise control, but I’m keen to have the radio remote controls, which operate via extra buttons on the front and rocker switches at the rear. Andrew Powis

The vehicle you are referring to appeared in Rob Marshall’s

Automotive Spaghetti feature on vehicle wiring. Although Rob wrote that many vehicles have the loom required already fitted in the vehicle, this is not the case with your MINI. Fitting just a steering wheel to your R50 would not be all that was needed for either the cruise control or the radio remote controls.

For the cruise control, you would also need a clutch switch, a slip ring and two extra wiring looms. Depending on the radio option fitted in your MINI, remote control might not be possible without changing the radio. A retrofit kit is available for the addition of cruise control – it’s part number 65 71 0 029 494 and the time given to fit the kit is around 3.5 hours.
