Alternative engine

Q

I’m thinking of buying a Mazda RX-8 as I like the body design and have read positive views from owners about its handling qualities and general performance. What I am not so enthusiastic about is the weaknesses of the rotary engine, the low MPG and the cost of keeping such a vehicle in tip-top condition. I would appreciate your advice on a possible engine transplant with a more reliable and economical unit that wouldn’t affect performance. Has anyone attempted to do this, what was the result and what would be the cost by a reputable garage? I am not a mechanic or engineer. Brian Cordingley

Although the engine in the RX-8 can be replaced, it would take extensive work. It must be remembered that the body and chassis of the RX-8 have been specifically designed for the rotary engine. As you would need to pay a garage to carry out this work, the cost of labour would most likely outweigh any fuel or maintenance savings. It must also be remembered that the handling qualities and performance are dependent on the rotary engine, so replacing the unit would alter the vehicle’s weight and performance.

Having said that, engine replacements have been carried out in the past and the most popular alternative units appear to be the Honda S2000 or Nissan SR20DET engines. However, it must be stressed that you will also need to modify the steering, as well as the mounting and driveshaft system, and that is before you even consider the ECU and immobiliser system.

If you do wish to have a conversion carried out, dynotorque.co.uk in Birmingham specialises in this kind of work, but expect to pay upwards of £5000 – plus parts – for the job.
