Found at the front of the engine, towards the left-hand side, is the idle air control valve stepper motor assembly. Ensure the connections are sound and clean. If this unit is ailing, the idle quality will suffer, with hunting/coughing evident.

7

The ignition coil packs and high-tension leads must be in peak condition to avoid misfires – resistance checks on the HT leads can highlight potential trouble. Check there is no ingress of oil/moisture into the spark plug tubes in the cylinderhead. Also watch for signs of heat damage to the coils, including blistering and a burning smell.

8

The safety inertia cut-out switch is designed to stop the flow of fuel in the event of an accident. It incorporates a manual reset button; check this is in its lowest position. Encountering a bad pothole, etc, can trigger the cut-out switch.

9

Diligent maintenance of K-series cooling systems is essential, including the pressure cap, which MUST be correct and operational. Pressure-test the cap and the system. Following work on the system, it MUST be bled of air, using the bleed points provided; positions vary according to model.

10

The coolant temperature sensor is found low down at the front of the engine. Its function is to advise the ECU of engine temperature so that fuelling requirements can be precisely calculated and regulated as the motor warms up.

11

Found just behind the radiator at the front of the engine compartment is the wiring and connector block serving the thermostatically-controlled electric fan. It is not unknown for corrosion to take its toll here or for the fan motors to seize.

12

There’s an important earth connection point on the left-hand suspension tower. Don’t just assume the electrical connection is good here. If you have any doubts, dismantle the connection, clean all components and reassemble, applying a silicone protectant.

13

On the left-hand side of the engine compartment is the underbonnet fuse and relay box. There are additional relays just ahead of this box. Make sure that all electrical connections are clean and sound. Note that…

14

…the underside of the fuse/relay box lid is clearly marked to help operators identify the components. Check often that the fusebox lid is correctly located and fully seals the box against the elements.

15

Positioned on the left-hand side of the engine bay, just ahead of the coolant expansion tank, is the anti-lock brake system (ABS) control unit.
