Rear door lock discovery

▶ The owner had booked in this 2005 Vauxhall Zafira because the offside rear door lock would not operate. With no manual override, this meant that she couldn’t lock the vehicle. However, something else she mentioned cast a seed of doubt about her diagnosis of a broken lock.

She mentioned that the door speaker was also not working, and could we look at it while the trim panel was off. This extra bit of information prompted us to first check the wiring loom between the vehicle and the door. This turned out to be a good move, because we found that not only had the wiring broken and been repaired in the past, it had broken again. The state of the wiring was terrible and the plastic insulation had cracked right back up to the plug in the edge of the door.

Vauxhall sell a repair kit for this, which includes a new plug, sheath and a bunch of wires with connectors. The kit is a bit pricey at £90, but this was the only real option. Once the new plug was wired up and plugged in, the door lock and speaker both worked perfectly.

The wiring was in terrible condition, with little left on which to solder a repair.
