Typical Mazda6 components

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor is located within the air filter housing intake trunking, towards the left-hand side of the engine bay. It works by monitoring the rate of air through the tract, passing this information to the ECU to determine optimum fuelling levels.

2

The underbonnet fusebox is mounted adjacent to the left-hand inner wing, just outboard of the battery. It is imperative that moisture is kept out of the fusebox; on refitting the lid, always ensure that it is fully engaged and sits snugly.

3

The blue component shown here is the relay for the fuel pump. If there’s an apparent loss of fuel pressure, testing at the relay can be useful (ie, assessing the fuel pump current draw to check if the pump is operating and how much current it is using).

4

Just behind the fuel pump relay are two fuses (15-amp and 20-amp, from left to right in this photo) relating to the fuel injection system and the pump respectively. Fuses can sometimes be overlooked.

5

The underside of the fusebox lid is marked with the identities and positions of the fuses and relays. This, viewed in conjunction with the car’s handbook, can be an invaluable guide for troubleshooting.

6

Many owners will be heartened to know that the battery in this model is a standard 12-volt type, meaning that it is much less expensive and complex to renew than the enhanced flooded batteries (EFBS) that are now commonplace.
