ELECTRIC POWER STEERING REPAIRS

-

22 Transfer the removed intermediate shaft/ UJ to the new column, noting that, on this Punto, you have to dismount the ECU to gain access. Be aware that the column shaft is in the same position as the old one.

23 Slide the column stalk and squib assembly over the column but, prior to tightening the clamp, ensure that it is located correctly over the tab (see inset pic). 24 Locate the steering wheel on the shaft splines, noting that any marks are aligned, if provided. Thread through any wiring from the squib and tighten the centre bolt to the appropriate torque setting. 25 Refit the horn and airbag wiring, along with the central pad in the steering wheel centre. Some cars might have extra connections – say, if buttons are mounted on the tab, for example. 26 The process to replace the column is the same as the removal process, only in reverse. Ensure that the column-shaft-torack-pinion retaining bolt engages with any safety groove, if applicable.

27 Reconnect the battery and check for fault codes. Some columns may need the steering angle sensor to be programmed, to determine the correct straight-ahead position.

28 Reassemble all interior trim. Road-test the car to check for correct assistance and the absence of any further fault codes. If necessary, return the old column to the remanufacturer so that your surcharge is refunded.
