With thousands for sale at any one time, there’s something for every budget. £500 is the starting point, but expect major faults or plenty of TLC required, with double that sum bringing loads of private and independent trader sales. Those cars are likely to have mileages heading for 150,000, but spending £3000 gets a cared-for, facelifted example.

At £4500-5000 you’re into the late MKIIS and these should be in excellent order, with 50,000-60,000 miles on the clock. Asking more than £5000 is a bit cheeky and takes you into the realm of early MKIIIS. With so many available, be fussy and buy on condition rather than age.
