Ford silver calcium battery
From 1997, the Ford Motor Company fitted certain models with a smart-charging system, accompanied by silver calcium batteries. These have superior charge tolerances – from 14.4 volts to 14.8 volts – and a 10% increase in cold cranking performance, compared to conventional batteries of the time. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ford insisted that the silver calcium batteries must be replaced only with those of the same type to avoid electrolyte loss caused by excessive gasing from the slightly higher charge voltages. Yuasa says that its current replacement battery range is within Ford’s specification for these vehicles, and works well with these early smart-charging systems without any detrimental effects.
Later vehicles that use smartcharging systems in tandem with regenerative braking and stopstart systems should be fitted with the same technologies as those installed as original equipment.
