All the main operations take place around the right-hand end of the engine. Access isn’t too bad, but the right-hand engine mounting assembly must be removed, so the weight of the engine needs to be taken from below.

With the front of the car raised and securely supported, the right-hand road wheel must be taken off and the forward end of the wheelarch shield/liner detached (two screws plus a plastic clip) and gently pulled rearwards or completely removed.

Loosen the alternator tensioning bolt (13mm), then slacken and remove the drivebelt. Inspect the belt very carefully and renew it unless it is in excellent condition. If there are any signs of cracking or other deterioration, it needs to go.

You have to gain access to the right-hand engine mounting and the components in that vicinity. The first step is to very carefully unclip the loom (take care as the plastic clip may be brittle). Ease the loom out of the clip and clear of the area.

Take out the single bolt (10mm) holding the coolant expansion bottle. This area is rather congested with a multitude of components. Take care when working so that the wiring and hoses are not disturbed unnecessarily.

Unbolt the bridge/strengthener bar/ strut brace (2 x 13mm). This action also releases the electronic control unit (ECU) from its mounting stud. Again, work with great care in this area so that no nearby components are damaged inadvertently.

Once released, the bridge/strengthener bar can be extracted from the engine compartment. Check the condition of the bar and, if it is in need of cleaning or repainting, take the opportunity to carry this out, giving time for it to dry before refitting.

Take the engine’s weight from under the car using a trolley jack topped by a soft pad/wood block, before separating the right-hand engine mounting. Undo the single nut (16mm) holding the intermediate bracket to the inner wing stud.
