Can you advise me which diagnostics scanner is best for home DIY work? Paul Davies

This really is the $64,000 question and the answer will depend on your budget and, of course, how much DIY work you do and to which vehicles. I personally prefer to recommend hand-held stand-alone units, so there are no complex programmes to install and no worries about taking your laptop into the garage.

For just under £50, you can get the Foxwell NT204, which will read and clear fault codes, as well as displaying live data, but it won’t reset service light functions or access ABS airbag and transmission systems. The entry-level tool for the wider range of functions would be the Foxwell NT614 all-makes four-system scan tool at £199. If your budget will extend further, the Foxwell NT644 Professional diagnostic system tool for £450 will cover even more functions and can be used to calibrate steering angle sensors and throttle position sensors, as well as battery configuration and DPF regeneration. At the very top of the range, and one which crosses firmly into the professional garage use, is the Foxwell GT80 Plus professional diagnostic system at £1795.

All these diagnostic tools can be found at gendan.co.uk and it may be advisable to discuss your particular needs with their experts, as they will be able to direct you to the tool which is right for you. You can give them a ring on 01792 588002 or email them via the website.
