The old XK8 was blighted by Nikasil liner worries, upper timing chain tensioner woes and feeble plastic-impeller water pump failures, but none of those issues apply to the XK150. The condition of the four chains driving the camshafts depends on when the engine oil was renewed – an oil and filter service using 5W-30 for the 4.2 and 5W-20 for the 5.0 should be carried out every 10,000 miles.

Any overheatin­g can be down to failed thermostat­s or clogged rads, so if the fan is kicking in more often than usual start with these items. And if there’s excessive rattle from the variable valve timing, you’ll need to replace one or both of the VVT units on the V8 engine.

Automatic gearboxes are generally bulletproo­f, but Jaguar recommends changing the fluid and filter every 60,000 miles to avoid potential problems.
