UNEXPECTED HITCHER

- Peter Hampson

On a recent shopping trip to B&Q, I took my Mazda MX-5 MKI out of the garage on one of its now rare excursions and set off down a section of the A666. At 50mph, a mouse popped out from under the bonnet, looking right at me. I couldn’t stop until we reached B&Q car park, by which time the mouse had disappeared back under the bonnet. I lifted the bonnet but couldn’t find him, even with the help of another shopper.

Returning home, we drove back along the same stretch of road, when the mouse popped out again. This time he climbed up onto the windscreen wiper and began to make his way past my door mirror, along the edge of the driver’s door. I started to lower the window to grab him, with the intention of putting him in the glovebox until we reached home, but I am afraid there was no happy ending: the wind caught him and blew him off.
