Gearlever problem

-

Q There is a problem with the selfcentring of the gearlever in my 2008 Vauxhall Zafira B SRI diesel 150PS with the six-speed manual gearbox, owned from new and having done 57,000 miles. When the engine is cold, it self-centres OK. However, after about 15 miles, all the gears engage, but the lever has to be moved manually into the 3rd/4th plane. At the moment, there is no evidence of the bearing problems that can affect the M32 gearbox.

It has been suggested that the problem lies with the remote change tower. If so, can this be removed and replaced without dismantling the gearbox? Stuart Barker

A As the symptom is altered by the temperature of the engine, I suspect the fault may lie with the remote operating cables for the gearchange. By disconnecting the cables from the gearbox turret, you may be able to feel tightness in one or both of them. Disconnecting the cables when the engine is warm and the symptoms have developed, you should be able to isolate the problem as being with either the cables/selector lever or with the gearbox selector turret.

If the problem is not with the gearchange cables or selector lever, then the selector mechanism in the gearbox can be extracted without removing the gearbox or any extensive disassembly. To gain access, you will need to detach the battery and its carrier, and you may also need to unbolt and move the ABS unit and bracket.

The gearbox should be in the neutral position and you need to ensure the top of the gearbox is clean. No debris should be allowed to drop into the gearbox during the operation. After removing the selector cables and disconnecting the reversing light switch, the two securing bolts on the top of the turret should be undone. Lift out the selector mechanism slowly until it stops, then turn it slightly clockwise and pull it up until the first part of the mechanism is fully visible. It will then need to be turned back anticlockwise to the original position. You should then be able to pull it out fully. Hopefully any problems with the turret can then be resolved. Refitting is in reverse order and the turret should be lowered slowly and turned first in a clockwise direction and then an anticlockwise direction to locate the selectors.
