BULKHEAD CRACKING

Symptoms of our fourth fault can be quite alarming, with the steering feeling loose and uncertain. This could be down to a worn balljoint, but could be much more serious and expensive to rectify. For two recent 9-3s suffering from this affliction, the cost of repairs exceeded the value of the vehicles, writing them off.

The problem may be due to cracking/ splitting of the bulkhead in the vicinity of the steering rack – essentially, the rack parts company with the bulkhead. One check is to try turning the steering wheel with the car stationary and, if the pedals move, it indicates a cracked bulkhead.

Repair kits are available to strengthen the bulkhead and prevent the cracking from occurring. These are available online for around £55, but we understand that the quality can vary. If the bulkhead has already cracked, rectification is a major job and can cost several hundred pounds.
