Banging concern

► Builders aren’t generally known for keeping their vans spic and span and the owner of this 2004 Peugeot Boxer 350 was no different. The vehicle was a workhorse and, so as long as it kept going, he wasn’t too concerned about any strange knocks or bangs it might be making. However, there was one particular noise which seemed severe and did catch his attention, so he brought it to us.

This was a good move. When we jacked it up, we discovered that the top of the strut mount had broken away and was effectively floating around loosely. This is not something we’ve come across often. New top mounts are readily available, so extracting the strut and compressing the spring, the strut top was quickly replaced, silencing the banging noise.

The securing points of the top mount had broken away leaving the strut top to float about.
