Broken key concern

-

► When the key broke in the ignition on this 2010 Hyundai i20, the blade fell onto the floor rather than being left in the lock. The base of the key, which flips in and out of the fob, had actually snapped, allowing the metal blade to become detached. VAG models have been using the same type of flip key-fob for many years, but this is not something we had seen before. It’s not clear if the owner was particularly rough on the key or if the material used wasn’t as robust as was needed.

As the key blade was still in one piece and the electronics of the key-fob were still operating correctly, all that was needed was a replacement fob case. This was supplied by our local auto-locksmith and, once the components were swapped across, the key could be put back into service.

?? ?? The base section of the key-fob had broken away, allowing the blade to drop out.
