Brake pad rattle

-

Since the annual service of my 2006 Toyota Corolla, I have been plagued by brake pad rattle and have done various things to overcome it, without success. I have done dozens of brake services and only use a light coat of copper grease, but have never had problems like this before. I can drive from cold for about three to four miles as normal, then the rattle kicks in and just builds as things get hotter. I am fairly sure it’s from the front brakes, but before doing anything more expensive I wanted to ask if you know of any trade tricks I can use to prove if its only the front pads or the rears as well? Very often a brake rattle or squeal will be caused by a worn or tired squeal shim or retainer. Different makes of brake pads also vary slightly in design and construction, some being coated with anti-squeal material.

There is a brake pad fitting kit available for your vehicle here:

Another option would be to fit a shim set such as this one: http://bit.ly/2cm3s7b With a separate handbrake operating in its own drum within the disc, it is not possible to gently apply this to eliminate the rear brakes. One option would be to have an assistant sit in the rear of the vehicle and try to pinpoint the noise more accurately.
