MAIN CAUSES OF TURBOCHARGER FAILURE
A foreign object can enter the air intake and damage the compressor wheel. If you find any evidence of this damage, replace the air filter and clean/renew any pipes and clamps.
Should a foreign object damage the turbine on the exhaust side (as pictured), check that this has not been caused by a disintegrating spark plug, or another part within the combustion chamber. Inspect the exhaust downpipe, because aluminium scraps from the engine can melt on to it.
Lack of lubrication is the main cause of turbocharger issues. Check that both the engine oil and filter are of decent quality, to the correct specification and replaced on time.
Excessive use of sealant on the sump can cause particles to dislodge and block the oil pump strainer. Using a sealant on the turbo oil and return pipes, or their seals, is also not recommended.
Unsympathetic driving techniques, including shutting the engine down immediately following driving under full load and/or blipping the throttle, does not allow the turbocharger’s turbines to slow and cool before the oil pressure is cut.
