IDENTIFYIN­G TURBO FAILURE

 Noise that varies with engine speed and load could be a failing turbocharg­er,

or a damaged intake hose/intercoole­r.

 Excessive oil consumptio­n can result from worn seals within the

turbocharg­er, often as a result of worn bearings. This leads to…

 Blue smoke from the exhaust. If this is not remedied, the catalytic converter and diesel particulat­e filter (if fitted) will also need renewal – adding considerab­ly to the parts bill.  Black exhaust smoke can result from a lack of boost, causing overfuelli­ng. This increases DPF loading. Causes may be a turbocharg­er fault, a leak of induction boost from a split pipe, or a punctured intercoole­r.
