REAR SUBFRAME REPAIRS

CONTINUED

-

 With the rear 1 subframe removed, there are several repairs that can be completed. Inside the engine bay, heater and coolant hoses can be checked and replaced if they are perished or damaged. The gear linkage cables (manual gearbox) are easier to renew.

 The upper

2 mounting points for the dampers and also the mounting points for the rear subframe are known to crack and corrode, especially if polyurethane suspension bushes have been fitted, so they are worth inspecting and repairing if necessary.

The front-to-rear brake pipes are known 3 to corrode, so now’s the chance to renew them if they are starting to deteriorate. The pipework and connection secured to the engine bulkhead are especially hard to change when the engine is in situ.

 On the manual gearbox, the clutch arm 4 corrodes and seizes, so it’s worthwhile fitting a new clutch arm for around £35 and even a new slave cylinder for around £40. Similarly, a new clutch kit costs around £60.

The rear subframe mounts are similar 5 to those fitted on the front subframe, and they can be replaced by undoing their respective nuts and bolts.
