Details in handbook
I have recently bought a 2002 Ford Maverick 2.0 with the Zetec engine. Unfortunately, it came without a handbook, so I’ve had to work out where everything is and what it does. I can only find an earlier handbook, which is different.
There are two things I need to figure out. First, there is a small button-type rocker switch towards the left-hand side of the dash; when switched on, it gives one beep and is lit by a red light in the centre. I cannot find out what this does or what it is for. Second, in the earlier handbook it says there was a switch to deactivate the interior alarm when the car was locked – say, if say a dog was left inside. Is there a similar switch on my later model?

The earlier Maverick was based on the Nissan Terrano II, but the later model is the same as a Mazda Tribute. The owner’s manual for this vehicle appears to be unobtainable, although the Mazda version and the US version (the Escape) can be downloaded at this site http://bit.ly/cmfemth
I believe the rocker switch on your vehicle is an optional extra to the basic model. It is part of the AWD system supplied by Dana and operates the central differential. This should not be engaged while driving on tarmac roads, which is why it alarms when pressed as a warning against accidental operation.
From the details I have, your Maverick does not appear to have the facility to deactivate the interior sensors.
Just before sending to press I received an update on this and the switch thought to be part of the AWD system was in fact an added extra to control the aftermarket parking sensors.
