Engine choice

-

Is there any reason I can’t fit a Rover 75 diesel engine in my Freelander 1, as its 150bhp compared to the Freelander’s 110?

I’ve been offered one that I’ve heard running, and after reading the section on Diesel Injectors in CM’S Solving Problems on Modern Engines book, I am thinking that they might be a nightmare to remove and work out which one is bad.

I have just bought one of the diesel injector flow meter tester kits and also bought a Foxwell NT680 Pro.

Both engines are the M47 unit and I suspect any power differences are gained more from the ancillary components such as the turbocharger and the improved designs of temperature management. The engine you have been offered should fit, but you will need to use the manifolds and ancillary components from your present vehicle, which means that the power output will be the same.

As you have said removing the injectors may prove problematic, but it may be worth a try as they are not always that bad, and as you now have the flow meter test kit, you should be able to pinpoint the poor injector before removal.
