Lack of power

-

My nephew’s 2012 SEAT Ibiza 1.2 diesel with 60,000 miles has intermittent warning lights for the glow plugs and engine management and seems to lack power, but stops short of going into ‘limp-home’ mode. It is showing the fault codes ‘P2563’ and ‘P00AF’. Once I reset the codes, the car will drive up to about 10 miles before the pattern repeats itself. It has been serviced and all the filters have been changed, but made little difference.

The codes ‘P2563’ and ‘P00AF’ both refer to the turbocharger boost control. The first indicates a range/performance problem and the second to a boost pressure control fault. With both codes connected to the boost position sensor, it may indicate a problem with the continuity of the wiring.

I would start by inspecting the plug and connection to the vane position sensor and ensure the wiring is in good condition. I would then check that the vacuum pipes from the actuator (located on the nearside wing, behind the air filter housing) aren’t damaged and that the actuator rod moves freely.

One of the most common issues with the VNT turbo is that the vanes become clogged with carbon deposits and stick in position, preventing the boost control actuator from operating and triggering a fault code. The other possibility is that the actuator itself has failed. These are normally sold as part of the turbo, but some companies such as this turborebuild.co.uk can supply them separately for around £90. The fault may also be within the ECU, but one of the previous suggestions is more likely.
