Typical Volvo V40 components
1
In order to gain
access to the top of the engine, it is first necessary to remove the large plastic cover panel, which incorporates two separate clip-on sections, one of which is shown in this photograph. Work with care; don’t force the plastic or it may fracture!
2
This V40 is
equipped with a fuel and emissionssaving stop-start system, and the battery MUST be the correct specified type in order to cope, and to work effectively. Adequate electrical power is essential; check all cables and connections too.
3
The battery’s
negative (earth or ground) terminal incorporates a monitor forming part of the ‘smart charge’ system which is fitted to this Volvo to help save fuel and emissions. Check for condition and signs of corrosion; during servicing clean and lightly grease the terminals.
4
The alternator
is located on the right-hand side of the engine bay. Its condition and operational effectiveness is key to correct functioning of the ‘smart charge’ (sometimes termed ‘intelligent’) charging set-up. The ECU controls alternator output at all times.
