Fault code explanation

-

Is there any information source that tells you the meaning of fault codes for a 2004 BMW E60 525D auto? I have just used my new Creator C310 diagnostic tool and the car had the following fault codes: ‘A0B2 Supply, terminal 30E’, ‘4513 Thermal oil level sensor signal’ and ‘5089-line status does not match transmission position’. I cleared them, but the ‘4513’ code came back so I assume there is something wrong with the oil level sensor. Could this be connected to the ‘A0B2’ code, as this implies something electrical? Jim Harrower While there are a few good sources of explanations of EOBD codes, there is not a one-stop place for BMW codes. Any list will only give you the same short explanation shown on the code reader – even the official BMW TIS software does not expand on the explanation. However, the basic explanation you have from the Creator C310 should be enough to point you in the right direction.

You do not mention if the EML was on or if you had just read the codes for the first time. If the latter is the case, then the other codes may be historic and will need no attention. The ‘A0B2’ code refers to a main relay and is unlikely to be connected to the ‘4513’ code. The ‘4513’ code indicates a faulty oil level sensor, but may also refer to a fault within the circuit; for this reason, before replacing the sensor I would check the connecting plug first. The ‘5089’ code indicates that, at some point, the gearbox sensor did not react quickly enough to given conditions. If this has cleared and it is not known how long the code has been present, I would leave it as it is unlikely to reflect a current problem.
