Typical Clio components

 The fuel injectors

12

are positioned at the top of the engine and normally concealed by a cover. On this car the injectors are still the original units, operating as they should. If new injectors are fitted they must be coded to the vehicle using suitable diagnostic equipment.

 This is the ‘Smart 13

Box’ for the Launch X431 Euro Tab II, plugged into the diagnostic socket on the Clio; the socket is located at the base of the facia on the right-hand side of the centre console. The Launch tooling works across a wide range of makes and models.

 When plugged in to the

14

diagnostic socket, the Launch unit connects and conducts an ‘auto search’ for the model, in this case producing a screen shot giving information such as the VIN code, plus engine and gearbox types. This applies to Renault and many other vehicles, but not all makes/models.

 By means of a full system scan,

15 the Launch diagnostic equipment provides the operator with an overall ‘health check’ view identifying all the computers installed around the vehicle, so that each can then be diagnostically interrogated individually.

The Launch communicates directly 16

with the ECU, so that the operator can control/switch individual systems and components, using the tool. This screenshot shows data relating to the Clio’s body control unit (UCH in Renault terminology).

 This Clio is

17

still fitted with its original fuel injectors, but the Launch tool can be used to identify and programme/code new injectors to the vehicle, if ever they need to be renewed. This is a data stream screenshot relating to injector performance…

 …and this screen view is highlighting the same injector fuel flow rates 18 in bar graph format. This enables the operator to see at a glance if all the injectors are working at the same level, and identifying any problem areas. The operator can save this information and return to it later.

 The Launch equipment

19

incorporates the facility to display a ‘special functions’ screen, from which the operator is able to re-programme components if required. These functions can be useful if, for instance, you renew the battery and it needs recoding, or the DPF filter needs regenerating, etc.
