Trans fault
I get the ‘Trans. Failsafe Prog’ showing on the dash of my 2004 Range Rover HSE after running a scan on it. I got the following reading:
1. Gear monitor fault: general fault
2. Gear monitor 2 fault
3. Gear monitor 1m fault: general fault Kunle Omole
The ‘Trans. Failsafe Prog’ display indicates a general fault within the transmission; this should leave a fault code that can be read-off to pinpoint the problem. The codes you have are all related to the gear monitor system and I would start by ensuring that the gearbox oil level is correct. While checking this, ensure that the gearbox oil does not appear to be burnt and does not contain tiny particles, metallic or otherwise.
The next point to check would be the multiplug electrical connection going to the gearbox. Disconnecting the plug and spraying it with electrical cleaner should ensure that the connections are good. Can-bus wiring does require clean connections and resistance within the circuit will cause problems. The voltage in the vehicle systems also needs to be correct, so a poor battery can sometimes be the culprit of such problems.
One other likely cause is that the rotary potentiometer in the transfer box shift motor is faulty. The faulty potentiometer may give an incorrect voltage signal, which would explain why code is showing. Unfortunately, the potentiometer is not available separately and is only supplied complete with the shift change motor.
