Rear spring change

-

u Broken springs are all too common nowadays, I am sure that the only springs I used to replace years ago were those that had gone saggy, but now barely a week goes by without a broken spring appearing.

This 2007 ML280 had pretty heavy-duty springs, but this didn’t stop one of them from breaking. The effect wasn’t noticeable to the owner and it was only the MOT test that had highlighted the problem. Although needing compressing to remove, the job time for the replacement is less than an hour, so the job should not be too taxing.

But this is a vehicle with a few years’ use and bolts that haven’t been undone for a while, so there was a small struggle with the lower arm securing bolt, making things just a little harder than they would have been on a newer motor.

Things went okay and the new spring was fitted, allowing the Merc to pass the MOT. I’d normally have liked to fit a pair of springs, but this Merc owner wasn’t up for the extra expense.

?? ?? The old spring had a couple of coils broken off but, once the tricky bolt was undone, the new spring was soon fitted into place.
