Injector seals

-

Q I’ve just replaced the copper diesel injector seals for the second time in a few weeks on my MKII Focus 1.6 (DV6) because I could see the black tar rising from one of the injectors again, and starting was sometimes proving difficult. In the first attempt I purchased a cheap set, 2mm deep. The second time I obtained a 2.4mm ‘repair’ set.

My question is, are the 2.4mm depth ones the deepest that you can get, and can you offer any tips or considerations regarding how to carry out this work?

A I must admit I was unaware that a variety of washer thicknesses was available. I have only ever purchased the genuine washer kit for this job, and this consists of the four copper washers and the O-ring seal and protector. If you have not also replaced the top O-ring seal and the protector, then this may explain why you are still having problems.

The injectors should be removed, and the body of the injectors should be cleaned (without disturbing the tip). Then the old copper washer, seal and protector ring should also be removed and discarded.

After carefully cleaning the injector seat and head recess, removing all traces of the black tar-like substance around the area, the new seals should be fitted before then replacing the injector. The clamp should be tightened to 4Nm then turned a further 75°. This should ensure that the injector now seals correctly in the head.
