Cambelt failure

-

Q I have a 65-plate Ford Fiesta S 1.0-litre turbo. I had a breakdown due to the cambelt failing. I was made aware the belt was covered for 100,000 miles, yet mine has done just under 50,000. I spoke to Ford and initially they said it should last for three years or 100,000 miles, then said it’s 60,000 miles or three years. Can you shed any light on my issue please?

A From the data I have, the cambelt replacement interval is 150,000 miles or ten years. This would not though be a guaranteed period but a guide to the expected operating life of the belt. The Ford warranty should cover your vehicle for three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

With only the tensioner crankshaft and camshafts in the driveline, the belt should really last much longer than the 50,000 miles yours has covered.

I did once come across a Fiesta cambelt which had started to ride off the pulleys due to a failed tensioner at 50,000 miles and this may be what occurred in your engine.

Although your vehicle would not be under the Ford warranty, if the vehicle has been regularly main dealer serviced, Ford may consider a good-will claim and I would contact Ford Customer Relationship Centre on 020 3564 4444 for further information.
