Avoid dirt, grit or other contamination from entering the airconditioning system.
Only if the air-conditioning system is completely depressurised should you disconnect the pipes. Inspect them carefully, because they can seize in place. If you break them, renewing the often expensive aluminium pipe is a very fiddly task. 6
