UNDERSIDE INSPECTION

-

28 TEST LOWER MOUNT

A lower engine mount is located in the centreline of the underside of the vehicle, just rearward of the engine. Use a pry bar to lever against it and look for excessive movement. 29 CHECK GEARBOX OIL

Undo the 24mm inspection plug at the front of the gearbox. If oil seaps out, refit and tighten it to 39Nm. The level should be below the inspection hole. Top-up with gear oil to API GL-4 Exxonmobil LV 75 spec. If you intend to drain it, there’s a drain plug on the nearside of the gearbox. It requires 1.7 litres of oil. 30 CHECK AUX BELT

The auxiliary drivebelt can be partly inspected from above the engine bay, but further checked and also adjusted from underneath. If it needs adjusting or renewing, slacken the mounting bolts for the alternator, then use a 12mm spanner or socket to adjust the thread of the tensioner as shown here.

31 INSPECT EXHAUST

There’s only one rubber hanger for the mid-section of the exhaust system and two for the rear silencer, so make sure they are all intact and secure. Check the entire exhaust system for corrosion.

32 TEST REAR BUSHES

Move to the rear underside of the vehicle and use a pry bar to check for play in the beam axle mounting bushes. This beam axle incorporates a trailing arm design. New standard bushes are available and also polyurethane bushes can be fitted.
