Buying, Owning & Improving
Which model?
▶ The Studio was the poverty spec model, with the Style getting body coloured bumpers and remote central locking which we see as a must. The Style+ added a heated front windscreen and aircon. The Zetec is understandably the most popular model with its 15in alloys and chrome detailing, though the Zetec S makes a sportier alternative with its bigger wheels, rear spoiler and slightly firmer suspension. Titanium spec is the posh one with its privacy glass, climate control, cruise and electric mirrors. The X version got traction control as well.
If economy is paramount, go for the Econetic, which has a lower ride height, skinnier wheels and detuned Duratorq 1.6-litre TDCI engine.
Similar to the Zetec S, the S1600 with its bodykit, stitched leather sports seats and stainless details inside is the mildly sporty model, while the ST is more specialist – and great if you want to take Fiesta ownership to the next level.
Our recommendation? The
1.6 Zetec S in five-door guise for practicality, or failing that the wellspecced 1.0 in 125bhp guise which is frugal and a real hoot to drive.
Brakes
The good news is there’s no specific problems to report regarding brakes on the sixth-generation Fiesta and as you can see from our price comparison, even main dealer parts aren’t expensive.
Moreover, there’s lots of ways to further improve the Fiesta’s stopping power. Simply fit ST180/220 calipers and carriers and bigger ST discs which is a bolt-on job, although you may have to buy different length brake hoses. Oh, and you can go further and replace the rear drums by swapping the axle with one from an ST too, though you need to fit bigger rear discs to really make it worthwhile. Otherwise, Mountune offer a range of brake upgrades ranging from braided brake line to grooved discs and high performance pad sets.
Other issues
Generally build was good so there’s few glitches to report. Door seals on this era Fiesta can liberate themselves from the door frame, causing wind noise at speed and water ingress in very wet conditions. It will be a case of either using a strong adhesive to stick them back in place or replace with fresh new rubbers.
Incidentally, there’s no need to put up with rear hatches that crash down on your head because caarparts.co.uk can source Stabilus tailgate struts for just £24.75.
Finally, don’t forget to check the function of the aircon because if you have to get involved in diagnosing faults and replacing components it can prove costly.
