Fuel stabiliser

-

QI have a 2007 Jaguar X-TYPE 2.0d. I read the item in the September 2021 issue on storage – does stabiliser additive apply to diesels as well as petrol? My Jag did only 1000 miles in the last 12 months due to health issues, and my 80,000-mile pride and joy will continue at low mileage within the next 12 months!

Last time it was used there was no A/C, the compressor clutch is not operating, the electrics OK! Looks like £500 bill! Is there any way of a cheaper fix?

AThe long-term deterioration of diesel fuel is slightly different from that of petrol and although the danger of moister absorption is still one of the factors that can affect the aging fuel, in diesel fuel this can create another and much more damaging effect.

The growth of fungi in the fuel can contaminate the fuel lines and filter along with the pump, and for this reason a fuel stabiliser which includes a biocide to supress the growth of any organisms that may be growing should be used.

Modern diesel fuel is even more susceptible due to the lack of sulphur. This makes the fuel more environmentally-friendly but does lower the resistance to the growth of unwanted organisms. There are a few products on the market, many of them designed for marine engines as these are often left for longer periods and in damp conditions. One such product can be found here https://bit.ly/cmcfbfa and I would recommend the use of this if the fuel stays in the tank for extended periods.

The aircon compressor operation is controlled by refrigerant pressure sensor and so the compressor will not operate if refrigerant level is low. It may be worth getting this checked first. Kwik Fit do advertise a Recharge or No Charge service. And say, “If we cannot improve the coolest vent temperature from your car by more than 10% when measured in degrees Celsius – then you pay nothing at all.” Making this an attractive option to try first.
