LED headlights

-

QI have a 1999 Porsche 911 (996 C2) 3.4 manual. I am presently working on the vehicle to get it in top shape and decided to fit new headlight units with LED bulbs, to replace the original units. I already have LED brake and rear indicators fitted. I was assured these were plug and play.

Unfortunately, after fitting them, all works well except I get hyper-flashing with the indicators. The hazard lights flash at the normal rate. The company have replaced the units once saying they must be faulty, but the second units act the same.

On doing some research, I have tried replacing the relay 191 which I believe to be the indicator relay with two different relays for LED lights. With the black relay I had no indicators at all, and with the red relay it kept on blowing the fuses straight away.

See details of relays in pictures. The original 3-pin relay has 49, 49a and 31 printed by its pins.

AThere is no indication on the details for the headlamps, as to whether the LED indicators have a built-in resistance to compensate for the lower wattage of the LED, but I would suspect that this should be the case.

The original relay is marked as 49, 49a and 31 and this would indicate 49 = +12V, 49a = Indicator switch and 31 = Earth. The red relay terminals are marked as 49, 49a and 5 which would be 49 + 12V, 49a = indicator switch and 5 which would be for the dash warning bulb, which is the incorrect circuit for your Porsche, with the terminals being in the incorrect position.

On the black relay JL-02 the terminal positions are BI, L and EI. And are EI = Earth, L = indicator switch and BI = Battery +12V. These should be correct and match the original relay number 1H0 953 227 that should be fitted. Except the relay you have is a CF13 JL-2 and you require a CF14 JL-02, the positive and negative terminals are reversed.

Fitting the CF14 JL-02 unit should rectify the problem.

FOOTNOTE: I did hear from Mark who confirmed that this did rectify the problem.
