Stop-start
Q I have a 2014 XF 2.2d. A few years ago (2018) you did a service article for this vehicle, but I didn’t manage to get a copy that month. I purchased the e-version from you but it is scant in details how to do some of the things.
Can I ask, can I buy the hard copy of this? Or could you do a more up-to-date and in-depth detailed service for home novices such as myself to tackle?
I have written to Haynes some time ago and the info I got was that they did not do a manual for the XF and didn’t plan to do so.
Can you tell me if I can get one from another English-speaking country? I would like a book to refer to rather than an online thing that you need to go through every page before finding what you want.
Despite this, I have tried to download some of the advertised emanuals for the XF, but they all seem to be from a 2009 version with a 2.7 engine. So, the servicing is null and void from this source.
Stop-start – having owned this vehicle for over five years, I have replaced both the batteries in the boot. I replaced the small battery first when the Stop-start stopped – at the same time the dash displayed upon start-up ‘Low Battery, shutdown in 1 minute’.
Replacing this battery made no difference and the Stop-start still didn’t. To this day I still get the low battery message. The alternator is charging properly and I am sure that it’s a computer reset type issue.
So, a few months later I bought a new large battery, the AGM one. Again this made no difference, with one exception. Now when I open the car with the remote the drivers door, boot and nearside rear passenger open, the front passenger door remains closed – and when you lock it the offside rear passenger door remains open.
Do you have any advice on how to reset this? In this month’s subscription issue, there is an article where someone resets the Stop-start on a Ford. Do you have a procedure like this for the XF, as this would be a real godsend if you did?
Peter A The 2011 XF 2.2 turbodiesel DIY Servicing feature was printed in the March 2018 edition of Car Mechanics. We have also covered the timing belt replacement on the Jaguar XF 2.2 in the October 2022 issue. We do attempt to cover as much on every vehicle as we can and will hopefully at some point feature more on the Jaguar 2.2 diesel engine.
It is unfortunately the case that it is very difficult to obtain workshop manuals for modern vehicles now.
If after replacing the batteries the vehicles power management system has not been reset using diagnostic equipment, the system will not operate correctly and so if this has not been done, it would be the first move. The engine control system will re-learn the values with the following procedure: After refitting the battery start the engine and allow engine to idle until it reaches normal operating temperature then switch off.
Whilst this will allow the parameters setting the idle to reset, the battery management system which operates the Stop-start can only be reset using diagnostic equipment. Without this procedure the vehicle will not know it has a new battery.
The central locking issue may be due to sticky door solenoids and is unlikely to be a programming issue, but if the fault is due to a software error, then again this does need to be reset using diagnostic equipment.
It may be worth checking the charge rate using a voltmeter to ensure that the battery is charging sufficiently, but unless the battery management system is reset using diagnostic equipment this may not accurately reflect the correct output.
