Timing belt change
Q I am going to change the timing belt and water pump on my daughter’s 2012 VW Golf MKVI 1.6 TDI with the CAYC engine. I have the full timing belt kit which comprises of belt rollers, tensioners, new bolts and studs, and a water pump. Having looked through most manuals, I cannot see a torque value for the new long stud which holds the belt tensioner that goes into the engine block and the small stud for the small tension roller. I am also unsure if you need to use three new bolts for the support bracket which bolts on to the engine block and if the engine mount bracket bolts need to be replaced or be reused? Someone told me the support bracket cannot be removed from the engine bay and can only be moved around to allow the belt tensioner to be changed and adjusted for the timing belt set-up.
John Hynd A The book time for the job is given by Autodata as 1.9 hours. The support mounting is difficult to remove from the end of the engine and it is often easier to leave it in place. However, it is not as difficult as the earlier engine which did not have the cambelt-driven fuel pump.
The studs do not have a torque setting and only need to be wound into the block and nipped up. The torsion is then set when the nuts are fitted and tightened up.
The torque setting for the tensioner nut is 20Nm + 45°, and the torque setting for the roller is 20Nm. The bolt for the large guide wheel between the fuel pump and water pump should be tightened to 50Nm + 90°.
It is quite acceptable to reuse the bolts for the engine mounting and support bracket, adding a dab of Loctite 222 if you wish. The Loctite 222 is easily removable so will not cause problems if future dismantling is required.
