They’re all too thirsty

Surely there must be something seriously amiss with the tested fuel consumption figure of 32.5mpg for the BMW 530d in your Edinburgh to Bristol group test.
I recently undertook a similar journey from the East Midlands to Carlisle via the A50, M6 and A6, returning via the A66 and A1M. The overall distance of 397 miles was covered at an average speed of 51 mph and a fuel consumption of 68mpg in a Peugeot 407 2.0-litre diesel.
There was considerable disruption on the M6, resulting in a great deal of stop/ start traffic. I would have expected any modern diesel of similar size to match or exceed these figures.
