Ambulance warning: it’s behind you!
We’ve all been there: you can hear the wailing sirens, but scanning your mirrors fails to detect the emergency vehicle. It’s far scarier for ambulance crews: drivers say they face panicky and haphazard driver reactions every day.
Help could be at hand: itting emergency vehicles with transponders to beam their location into connected cars from up to 500 metres away. In our Mondeo, the driver’s screen lashes up a warning triangle and a graphical representation of the ambulance closing in from behind. It’s very clear, but for information only; the driver is not advised what to do. ‘The Milton Keynes ambulance and Coventry ire brigade would have it tomorrow – it can really simplify their passage,’ says Tim Armitage.
