The double-page spread of VW Group designers in September’s issue (Mauer’s Men) left me agog. At least I now have a better understand­ing of the paucity of true innovation in car design.

The European automotive industry is not alone in lacking diversity, but the exclusivel­y white, male make-up of its designers does suggest at the very least a lack of imaginatio­n, interest in customers and/or a very real issue in attracting and nurturing diverse candidates to design. Might I suggest ‘Mauer’s Yesterday’s Men’ as an alternativ­e headline?
