Clever hot triple

The biggest petrol engine in the new Focus is a 1.5-litre three-pot, similar to that in the Fiesta ST. It’s an advanced little unit, all-aluminium with an integrated exhaust manifold and a combination of port and direct fuel injection. And sometimes it’s a twin; one of the cylinders shuts down under light load to save fuel, iring up again in 14 milliseconds.
