Dive, dive, dive! Watches that float our boat

Drivers love divers’ watches. Here are three more reasons why.

- By Ben Oliver

We like to know that our off-roaders can cross the Darien Gap and our diver’s watches descend the Marianas Trench, even if few SUVs venture far off-road and few watches go deeper than the deep end of a municipal pool. We need both to do the basics well – drive on-road, tell the time – but beyond that it’s mostly about the look. Here are three well-proven dive watches that can do the business if required, but more importantly have been given a bold new design direction.

01 I Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition From £6520

A new Bond film means a new Bond version of Omega’s Seamaster, which 007 has worn since 1995. This one is a corker. It has a titanium case and bracelet, and the option of a fabric strap. The aluminium dial and bezel replicate the brown hue vintage watches acquire after long exposure to sunlight, the ‘tropical’ e ect. omegawatches.com

02 I Panerai Submersible Verde Militaire £7500

For decades the dive watches Panerai made for the Italian Navy were classed as state secrets; now here’s one you can only buy online. The Submersible is Panerai’s most rugged model, and this new green version makes it yet more militaristic. With 300 metres of water resistance it delivers what those macho looks promise. panerai.com

03 I Doxa SUB 200 From £910

Swiss brand Doxa’s dash clocks adorned racing Bugattis, and the Doxa Sub of 1967 was the first watch made for recreational divers. It was soon adopted by pros too, and Doxa went on to pioneer advances in dive-watch design with Rolex. The great-value Sub now has six bright colour options with matching rubber straps, but we’d pick the classic steel bracelet. doxawatches.com
