WELLS TOURING PARK

Set just over a mile from the medieval city of Wells, this touring park has 60 hardstandi­ng pitches with electric, and the option to upgrade to full-service pitches. On site facilities include toilets and showers, a disabled wet room, a launderett­e and dog shower. There is also a herb garden, croquet and petanque, and a licensed coffee lounge serving drinks, snacks and cake and offering takeaway.

Wells Touring Park is surrounded by the Mendip Hills which offer plenty of walking routes, and there are many tracks and minor roads for cyclists to explore. Wells itself has a spectacula­r cathedral and Bishop's Palace, along with a selection of shops and places to eat.

Also just over a mile away are the magical Wookey Hole caves, and the historic and the town of Glastonbur­y is just a 15-minute drive. Buses run from Wells city centre and there is a bus stop just across the road from the site entrance.

On the Hampshire/Dorset border, Back of Beyond is a short drive from the New Forest National Park. With 30 acres for touring and camping with woodland and lakes to explore, this a nature-rich site perfect for relaxing. There are 80 supersized electric pitches. Facilities include a newly upgraded shower and toilet block, a laundry room, waste points and hot water dog wash. The park has an 18-acre private woodland for walking, a nine-hole pitch and putt and wildlife lake for you to enjoy. There is a fully licensed, well-stocked shop on site, too, and there is a pub within walking distance.

All this makes for a tranquil haven, but if you do decide to head off site then Holt Heath National Nature Reserve and Moors Valley Country Park are both close by. The nature reserve includes heathland and ancient woodland and lots of walks (park at White Sheet Car Park BH21 7DB). Moors Valley is great for a day out walking, cycling, having fun hiring a Segway, or enjoying a ride on the miniature steam train.

A previous AA Campsite of the Year winner, Two Mills Touring Park is set one mile south of the market town of North Walsham and seven miles from Wroxham, the heart of the Norfolk Broads. There are 81 pitches, most are full service with electric, fresh and waste water. Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderett­e, disabled facilities, a small shop, plus dog walk and exercise area.

The site is surrounded by country lanes and byways which are great for cycling and walking. Two miles away is the pretty village of Worstead with a huge church and a country inn is only 150 yards from the site. Two Mills is close to the coast, being only eight miles from the Victorian seaside resort of Cromer. A half hour drive away is the city of Norwich (you can use park and rides at Sprowston and Norwich Airport), and bus services are available from North Walsham.

Located by the banks of the River Tweed, and on the England/Scotland border, this site is just 10 minutes’ drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed. This coastal town is full of history, including the remains of a medieval castle and defensive walls that still surround the whole of the town – their entire circuit can be walked. The coast is also a short drive away and in this area of England the coastline is rugged and dramatic, the perfect place for a walk. From the site you can venture over the border into Scotland and walk alongside the river to Paxton House and Gardens and only a quarter-of-a-mile from the site is Chain Bridge Honey Farm.

BEACONSFIE­LD HOLIDAY PARK

Only four miles from historic Shrewsbury, this site has a choice of grass or fully serviced hardstandi­ng pitches, set in landscaped grounds. There are toilets and showers at Beaconsfie­ld, along with the addition of coarse fishing pools, a coffee shop, an indoor pool and steam room. There is also the stunning Croft bar and restaurant for food and drink, both indoors and al fresco. The Shropshire Way passes by the park which is ideal if you enjoy walking and there are plenty of local lanes for cycling. A bus stop is one mile away and Shropshire’s county town, Shrewsbury, offers lots to see. There are plenty of shops and places to eat, plus a cathedral, castle and pretty Quarry Park. You’ll also find a train station here for exploring further afield.

In the quiet, rural Suffolk village of West Stow you’ll find Kings Forest Caravan Park. The site has immediate access to Kings Forest and is five miles from Bury St Edmunds and 12 miles from Newmarket. The site is located at Widenham Farm and offers electric hook-up pitches on solid grass. While this is an adultsonly site, children over the age of 15 are welcome as long as under adult supervisio­n. Facilities at the park include a toilet and shower block, a warm dog wash, pot wash and veg prep area.

With the forest on the doorstep there are miles of tracks to explore on foot, bike or horseback. The site is opposite the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village and Country Park where there is a stunning recreation of an Anglo-Saxon village surrounded by 125 acres of countrysid­e, heath and woodland. Bury St Edmunds, with its pretty Abbey Gardens and grand cathedral, also has a train station, and there is a bus stop just outside the campsite’s entrance.

WIDDICOMBE FARM TOURING PARK

As well as having an enviable location at the heart of the English Riviera, this south Devon adults-only site also has an on-site restaurant, bar and regular evening entertainm­ent with musicians and singers. Widdicombe Farm has all-weather pitches with electric hook-up or you can upgrade to a fullservic­e

pitch. Gordon’s Bar is the place to be for a drink and entertainm­ent and Poppies Restaurant offers daily home-made meals. There’s also a shop selling the essentials. The amenities include wet room-style bathrooms, a launderett­e and dog exercise area.

The site is on the doorstep of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, which between them include sandy beaches, a marina, harbour, and plenty of shops and restaurant­s. There are plenty of car parks in the towns and Widdicombe Farm also runs a bus service (minimum numbers required).

RIVERVIEW CARAVAN PARK

Located on the east coast of Scotland, this site is just five miles from Dundee. For the 2021 season, Riverview is not accepting any children so this riverside site is now an adult-only oasis. There are 36 individual­ly landscaped, hardstandi­ng pitches with electric hook-up. The site borders the beach and a championsh­ip golf course. It’s a 10-minute walk from the village shops and pubs/ restaurant­s.

Site facilities include heated toilets and showers (but these are currently closed at the time of writing), a leisure suite with sauna and gym, plus a games room.

In Dundee there is plenty to explore, with highlights including a Victoria & Albert Museum, Captain Scott’s polar exploratio­n ship, the RSS Discovery, a wildlife centre and a science centre. There is a train station in nearby Monifieth, just half-a-mile from the site, should you wish to travel further afield.

South-facing Red Kite Touring Park is located just one mile from the historic market town of Llanidloes and is set in 20 acres. The site boasts large grounds with nature ponds, walking routes and a dog walk area. There are also manicured flower beds, lawned areas and pretty wildflower areas. The pitches are fully serviced hardstandi­ngs, laid out into four terraces. The pitches come with 16A electric, fresh water connection, grey and brown water disposal, free WiFi and piped TV. The state-of-the-art toilet block features underfloor heating, two shower rooms, a wet room, laundry, and a dedicated dog wash with dryer.

Just 20 minutes’ walk away is the market town of Llanidloes and it’s 40 minutes’ drive to the coast. The site is in an ideal location for exploring the Clywedog Reservoir, Hafren

Forest and the Elan Valley or, further afield, the Snowdonia National Park or the Brecon Beacons.

Perfect for walkers and nature lovers, this site is a pure countrysid­e retreat. Set near the town of Longnor, the site is an oasis of tranquilli­ty, surrounded by meadows and rolling hills. You can easily explore the vast Peak District National Park. There are a host of walks to choose from, including the Monsal Trail and the Tissington Trail. It’s just a 30-minute drive to Dovedale where you can explore the stepping stones and conquer Thorpe Cloud. If you’d prefer to stay closer to home then starting from the site is a lovely short walk taking in Longnor village.

Longnor Wood has 47 hardstandi­ng pitches – a choice between just electric hook-up or fully serviced. Facilities include a heated toilet block with shower rooms and private wash cubicles, a launderett­e, dog wash, boules court and putting green. If you don’t mind a short drive then popular places and attraction­s such as Bakewell, Buxton, Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are only 30 minutes away.
