tree planting pledge from Berghaus

Outdoor clothing specialist, Berghaus, has pledged to plant two million trees every year in a bid to offset the environmental impact of its business.

The Good Wood Project is part of the UK company’s aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

In the first 12 months of the initiative, Berghaus will plant two million mangrove trees across Madagascar and Kenya in partnership with Eden Reforestation. When the trees are fully grown, they’ll absorb 24,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year – the equivalent of the emissions created from driving a car over 60 million miles.

Berghaus said mangroves are among the most environmentally beneficial trees on the planet but in the last 50 years roughly half of the world’s mangrove forests have been cut down.

Mangroves absorb two to four times more carbon, and contain the highest carbon density compared to other global forest systems.

Berghaus will also use the Good Wood Project to raise awareness of the importance of trees, both globally and locally.

The campaign will create a ‘digital forest’ on social media with people able to share photos of their favourite trees on Instagram using the hashtag #TheGoodWoodProject

Eden Reforestation is a not-forprofit organisation which aims to reduce poverty and restore healthy forests, by hiring local people to plant millions of trees every year.

The money they are paid will help them afford daily essentials such as food, shelter, medicine and clothing for their families.
