Cardmaker around the world
Cardmaker Joanna Gould in hot and sunny Sydney reveals what happened when she sent a card to her favourite Home and Away star!
Meet keen crafter Joanna who lives in Sydney
I was born in Sydney, Australia where I’ve lived all my life, it’s a big modern city with a beautiful harbour – everyone will have heard of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. I live in a granny flat in my mother’s backyard out in the suburbs about 50 minutes away from the heart of the city with my wonderful husband of five years. A lot of tourists that come to Sydney do take the journey out to the area where I live as there’s this little place called Koala Park where you can cuddle a koala.
I’ve been a keen crafter since I was a little girl and I first started making cards 16 years ago back in 2002. I saw a gorgeous Lady and the Tramp gift card on the front of a magazine and, being the huge Disney fan that I am, I just had to get it. From then on, I was hooked. The beauty of cardmaking is you know that the receiver won’t get the same card from someone else.
I also love to make ATCs (artist trading cards) and scrapbooks, I like to sew patchwork quilts and cushions and I do jigsaw puzzles, too.
I’m the only one of my family and friends who makes cards and my mum often says she doesn’t know where I get my crafty genes from. Cardmaking is somewhat popular in Australia, but not as big as it is in the UK.
Sydney is quite a warm place to live and it can reach temperatures of 40°C in summer, but when the weather is not too hot it’s just perfect for sitting in the sun on my porch making cards. This is definitely my happy place. Here in Australia we have Christmas in the hot summer so, because we don’t have a white winter, my cards usually feature things like Christmas trees, decorations, Santa and angels instead of snowflakes and snowmen. I do, however, make a few wintry ones for my overseas penfriends. I don’t usually get the Cardmaking
& Papercraft Christmas paper pack until some time after Christmas but I tend make some cards with that in January as I can’t wait to play with the pack. Then I start making the rest in October. I usually make over 60 cards as I make some for my family to use as well as myself.
