PRESIDENT Mary welcomed members to last month’s meeting on October 9. Apologies were received from Annetta, Pauline, Leah and Gaynor. The minutes were read, agreed and signed and the newsletter was read. The meeting to discuss the programme for the next year was reviewed with reference to officers for the coming year.

After the business part of the meeting, Louise gave a talk about women who lived their lives as men giving examples from as early as the 6th Century in the middle east when a young woman agreed with her father that she should dress as a boy so that she did not have to marry. Her father entered a monastery and his new son went with him. All went well for several years but eventually the truth was discovered and she was ejected from the monastery and took to begging outside the monastery walls. After her death she was regarded by both Catholic and Orthodox churches as St Maria the Monk.

Some women managed to live most of their lives as men and went on to perform some brave and beneficial work in their roles. Mary gave the vote of thanks to Louise for her interesting talk, following which Louise judged the competition with the result of: 1st Jean, 2nd Lyn and 3rd Mary.

The meeting finished with light refreshments and members were reminded that the next meeting would be the AGM on November 13 at 2pm in the Wesley Chapel. New members are always welcome.
